WASECA, Minn. (KEYC) - The Bethlehem Inn serves as a refuge for women and children facing homelessness in Waseca.
The shelter was established in 2019 within the premises of a repurposed church, and it is now dedicated to tackling an issue that they feel is frequently ignored.
“Some might assume that a small town such as Waseca wouldn’t face issues with homelessness,” stated Program Administrator Sue McIntosh. “Yet, over the last year, we have had 105 referrals from women looking for shelter due to their homeless circumstances. This clearly indicates a significant need for assistance.”
In late December, the shelter was awarded funding by the Waseca County Board of Commissioners.
Initially, the funds were designated for a low-income housing initiative, but since those plans did not materialize, Bethlehem Inn has decided to allocate the recent financial boost towards their "after-care" program. This program aims to assist individuals residing in the shelter in securing housing arrangements once they complete their stay.
Bethlehem Inn expressed their commitment to assisting families in need, emphasizing that their ultimate aim is for these families to never return after they have left.
"According to Mcintosh, having access to sustainable supportive housing will significantly improve various aspects of their lives."
